Where We’re At: Opening Night of Creative Campus 2011
On September 16th, 2011, 6 – 8pm artist participants who had been working on Creative Campus 2011 celebrated the opening of their exhibition Where we’re at. Work created over the summer long programme was displayed in the Big Picture, a technology-based community information centre run by South Dublin County Council.
The participants were mentored by support artists Matt Green, Joan Healy and Stuart Sloan and were invited to use the resources available in the Big Picture, particularly the technologies it contains, and to explore the site’s physicality, use and significance. Work created involved mixed-media installation, animation, video, sound and performance art.
Where we’re at speaks of many things: where we’re are at in terms of the physicality of this building and the geographical area of Tallaght, but also where the artists are at in relation to the development of their practice, and even where we’re at as a society in our current socio-economic and political development.
The processes involved in creating work have promoted interesting debates on how to develop a positive future for the numerous vacant buildings in the area surrounding Tallaght’s Cultural Quarter, near the Tallaght LUAS stop.

Sinead Curran‘s work explores the relationship between cinema and architecture, with particular focus on modern architecture. Tension is created between the architectural space used in cinema and the real space. This film explores cinema’s capacity to function in a similar way, to describe the fictional utopian dream of what Tallaght was meant to be. The film is shot in unused spaces in Tallaght, casting a character in a failed utopia. Imagined futures are built upon images informed by cinema’s past and derived from our present, along with the stories that have shaped our own cultural evolution. Influence has been taken from from early 1900s and 1970s sci-f films, particularly the work of HG Wells and Andrei Tarkovsky.
