Jonathan McGonnell Interview
Jonathan McGonnell is a graduate of both The National College of Art & Design (2003), Dublin and the National Film & Television School, London (2012). Long before undertaking any education in the design disciplines he would spend every spare minute making and creating and he has pursued that passion through his time as a student and as a working professional.
He now holds over a decade's previous experience in the design industry including setting up and running a design studio for eight years and more recently having completed two years training under established designers and film makers on the production design masters course at the National Film & Television School, London. Currently he is working in the film industry primarily as a concept artist.
When and why you decided to take up your chosen career?
There isnt a time or a specific reason why I chose this career everything has been a progression of pursuing a series of challenges and opportunities.
Did you find it difficult to break into this industry, what tips would you give to any young person trying to break into your industry?
Yes, extremely difficult in hindsight. It took a lot of effort to find a place in the industry, I have managed to slip myself through a very narrow gap. My advice would be that patience and perseverance are key.
Who is your greatest influence regarding your chosen career?
My mum and dad... its true.
What is the most challenging project you have ever worked on?
I always try and make whatever project I am currently working on the most challenging.
What is the best piece of professional advice you have ever received?
The best professional/ career advice I have been given in the last while is that 'its all about family, anything else is an illusion'.
