African Dance is a high-spirited, fun, high-powered rhythmic dance experience for anyone who loves to dance. With live drumming percussion, this highly energetic class expands on traditional dances of West Africa. Catherine's classes are energetic and dynamic - allowing students to completely immerse themselves in the joy of dancing, while at the same time getting a full body and cardio-work out.
Catherine began her studies of African Dance at City College San Francisco and has travelled to West Africa to study under Lacina Coulibaly (Kongo Ba Teria Dance Company - Burkina Faso), Ousseni Sako (Salia ni Seydou Company - Burkina Faso) and Mamadou Kante (Academie de Percussion et de Danse Traditionalled du Ballets Kantiguilla (Mali). She also travels regularly to Europe and the US to train with some of the world's leading African dance masters including Yousouff Koumbasa, Maguette Camara & Babacar NDiaye. Catherine is also a professional contemporary dancer and yoga teacher, so her classes incorporate a vast knowledge of somatic practices.
